Crosskeys AFC squandered a chance to close the gap on Division One leaders Albion Rovers, only managing a 2-2 draw against Villa Dino Christchurch. Pontnewydd United beat Shaftesbury Youth 4-3 at Shaftesbury Park. K-2 AFC 2nds moved out of the bottom two places, after a 5-3 win against Newport Corinthians.  Graig-Y-Rhacca failed to field a side against Lliswerry and on Monday Secretary Rob Bailey reluctantly withdraw the second side from the division. With players failing to show the commitment needed to run the team, there wasn’t much the secretary could do.

12th & 13th November 2011

Monmouthshire Building Society Newport & District Football League

The District League was severely restricted this week with the Weather, the International and the loss of a great manager.  K-2 AFC postponed both games, due to the sudden death of their manager Mohammed Arif. Well known in both Football and Cricketing circles, Arif was the inspiration behind the progress that K-2 has made in the Leagues over the last four seasons.  He did more to improve the ability of Asians in our leagues and to show the standard of football that the young lads of K-2 could achieve. He will be sadly missed by everyone who enjoyed their style of football. Just one game was played in the Premier X, with Cwmcarn Athletic getting the better of Athletico Cwmbran by five goals to one.

The Premier Y faired better with six games taking place. With the leaders Pill AFC without a game, Albion Rovers took full advantage to move within one point of Pill. Albion won 12-1 away to Trethomas Bluebirds. Third placed AC Pontymister won 4-1 at home to Lucas Cwmbran.  Marshfield reversed their fixture to Newport Corinthians and the Corries welcomed them with open arms. The Corries ended up 7-1winners. Coed Eva Athletic entertained Spencer Boys Club and had to settle for one point in their 4-4 draw. Cwmbran Celtic is having a bit of a yoyo season. They have had some heavy defeats and some good wins over the top teams. This week they beat Lliswerry 2-1, perhaps it was because their higher teams didn’t have a game?   Bottom club Rogerstone suffered another defeat, going down 6-0 at home to Malpas United.

Division One leaders Albion Rovers were made to struggle against Pontnewydd United, just scraping home 3-2. Villa Dino Christchurch won 2-1 against Lliswerry at the Glebelands. All other games were postponed.

Both teams fighting to become Division Two continued their good form. FC Boilermakers won 4-0 against Cwmcarn Athletic and Machen FC won 2-1 at home to Cromwell Youth.  Llanyrafon pocketed a Black to FC Pockets Green, to record a 7-3 win at Tredegar Park.  Ponthir FC were on top throughout their game with Docks Cons to gain a 6-3 win.  Racing Club Newport won 4-2 against Lucas Cwmbran.

With Pill AFC (3rds) not playing, Infusion Sports Bar drew level on points, at the top of Division Three, after a 7-2 win over Albion Rovers. Coed Eva Athletic won 4-2 away to close rivals Llanyrafon.  Crosskeys won 5-2 at home to CCYP AFC.  Newport Eagles have hit good form recently and this continued with a 3-1 win against Ponthir.

Just one game was played in the Sunday Division, where the undefeated Docks Cons continued their winning ways with a 5-3 win against St Julians Old Boys.

Monmouthshire Building Society Newport & District Football League

K-2 AFC played their first game since the death of their Manager Mohammed Arif and did him proud with a 3-0 win over Graig-Y-Rhacca. This was their tenth win out of ten games in the Premier X and with the sort of football they play, it will be a long time before they are beaten in the league.  Oakfield Inn hammered Pill Hibernians 9-2, with goals from Jamie Thompson, Stuart Jones, Michael Gough, Nicholas Pattimore, Gareth Williams, David Louth, Corey Casa-Grande, Gareth Davies and Paul Walker. Ponthir won 4-0 away to the Docks Cons, with two goals each for Michael and Adam Jones.  Villa Dino Christchurch was made to struggle against bottom club Caerleon Town, only just winning 2-1.

Pill AFC remain one point ahead of Albion Rovers at the top of Premier Y, after both clubs had comparatively easy wins.  Pill beat Newport Corinthians 5-1, with goals from Connor Yeates (2), Shaun Seivwright (2) and Robert Miller.  Albion Rover won 4-1 against Cromwell Youth, with Marc Savigar (2), Geraint Roberts and Chris Morgan scoring. Marshfield won 3-1 at home to Rogerstone. The Cons won 17-1, with goals from Ryan Cook (5), Kyle Cuthbert (3), Joseph Hosapian (2), Daniel Burnell (2), Kurt Bowden (3) and Craig Lewis (2).

Division Three leaders Pill AFC gained a 5-0 win without kicking a ball, as Crosskeys FC was unable to field a team. Infusion Sports Bar are waiting in the wings, if Pill drop any points. Infusion are level on points, but have played two games extra. They beat high fliers Racing Club Newport 3-2, with Jamie Yasin (2) and Leeroy Brown scoring.                         The Sunday league top two clubs both suffered heavy defeats, when both were expected to sail home with easy wins. Leaders West of England came a cropper at the hands of Rogerstone United. Rogerstone won 4-2, with their best goal coming just after halftime. From thirty plus yards, Gareth Thomas swivelled and hit a cracking volley, which went over the keepers head into the net. Some say it was a sliced miss hit, but I’m sure Gareth will say he planned it. Michael Brown, Luke Davies and Thomas Brookes were the other goal scorers. Second Placed Docks Cons was well beaten by the bottom club Windsor Wanderers, to the tune of 5-2. Windsor goals came from Kyle Bassett (3), Simon Batton and Lee Williams.

                        26th & 27th November 2011

Monmouthshire Building Society Newport & District Football League

After many seasons in the District Leagues, Pill Hibernians withdrew both teams from the Premier X and Division Two. It is a sad fact that the commitment shown by players to clubs has dropped off dramatically in recent years. With only ten teams participating in the Premier X, the push for Gwent County status is probably down to three teams. Pontnewydd United are in the running after a 8-4 win over local rivals Athletic Cwmbran, their goals coming from Chris Evans (2), Stuart Brown (2), Leon Whitcombe, Jon Rees, John Lloyd and Adam Whitcombe. Villa Dino Christchurch did themselves a power of good with a 3-0 win over the leaders K-2 AFC, their goals coming from David Jones (2) and Peter Scarfi.                         Division Two leaders FC Boilermakers were without a game on Saturday, which gave second placed Machen FC a chance to close the gap. They did this in style, with a 8-2 win against Cromwell Youth. Six goals from Adam Jones (3), Jack Thomas, Oliver Eastman and Yousif Al-Doori saw Ponthir win 6-2 away to the Docks Cons.                         Just Two points separate the top four teams in the Premier X, after Villa Dino Christchurch went down to a shock defeat from Oakfield Inn and Pontnewydd United and Ponthir could only manage a 0-0 draw. Villa Dino had their heads in the clouds after their latest win against K-2 AFC, but they were lucky to get close to Oakfield. Villa Dino were poor, gifting goals to Oakfield, who were good value for win. The score line flattered Villa Dino as they scrambled 2 late goals in last 5 minutes. Caerleon Town came close to their first win of the season, before going down 3-2 to Athletico Cwmbran, whose goals came from Ryan Martin (2) and Stephen Farr.
